Paid for.Going nowhere.

Leftover rolls sit in Brainport warehouses for months. Still good, already paid for.

Good fabric gets stuck between too much and too little.

The textile companies we interviewed hold leftover rolls that are still good. They sit in the warehouse for months because there is no regular buyer for them.

Month 0

Bought by the order

Wholesale fabric is ordered in hundreds of metres. In our trader's case, 500.

Months 1 to 6

Sold by the season

Over a season, 400 metres go into products. Then the collection changes and that colour is no longer wanted.

Months 6 to 24

Stuck on the shelf

The last 100 metres are still good. Too little for a large manufacturer, too much for a small designer. They can sit for two years, taking up shelf space and tying up money.

Example from a textile trader on our team.

“The quantity is too small for some larger manufacturers and too large for a small designer to buy all at once.”

“We can share a list, but it becomes outdated when some rolls are sold.”

“A discontinued shade of outdoor fabric can remain unused even though the material is still in good condition.”

For context: Dutch household textile waste, 2022
